Qatar skipper Hassan Al-Haydos has retired from international football, the country’s Football Association (QFA) announced on Saturday, bringing down the curtain on a 16-year career highlighted by back-to-back Asian Cup victories.
“The Qatari Football Association extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to the captain of our national team, Hassan Al-Haydos, following his decision to retire from international football after a long career,” the QFA said in a statement.
The 33-year-old netted twice in the Asian Cup earlier this year as host Qatar won its second title, beating Jordan in the final.
Al Haydos's journey with the national team commenced in 2008, a year that bore witness to his exceptional talent as Qatar clinched victory. His remarkable performance during that period earned him the prestigious Most Promising Player award from the Qatar Football Association. Throughout his career, Al Haydos continued to elevate his game, culminating in his recognition as the Best Player in 2015.
Over the course of 183 international matches, Al Haydos showcased his prowess on the field, netting an impressive total of 41 goals. He played a pivotal role in Qatar's campaigns at the AFC Asian Cup finals, representing his country with distinction in tournaments held in Qatar (2011), Australia (2015), UAE (2019), and the 2023 edition held once again in Qatar.
Among his numerous accolades, Al Haydos celebrated triumphs such as the 2014 Gulf Cup victory and back-to-back AFC Asian Cup wins in 2019 and 2023. His contributions not only brought glory to Qatar's footballing prowess but also solidified his legacy as one of the nation's most celebrated athletes.
As Qatar bids farewell to a true footballing icon, Hassan Al Haydos leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
