A food sustainability initiative ‘Tadamon’ was launched at the International Zone of Expo 2023 Doha aimed at reducing food wastage by ensuring sustainability in food supply, agricultural, environmental and health sectors.
The objective of the initiative is to improve recycling of all solid, organic and plastic wastes in a manner that contributes to preserving the environment.
The initiative was launched by Al Rayyan Municipality together with the Ministry of Municipality’s Food Security Department, General Cleanliness Department, Hifz Al Naema Center, Waste Recycling and Treatment Department, a social initiative to reduce food waste.
The Director of Al Rayyan Municipality, Jaber Hassan Al Jaber said that partnership is aimed at reducing food wastage, achieving balance in distribution of food stocks, and creating more sustainable development system and social solidarity in order to achieve food security for all segments of society and will contribute towards enhancing awareness on importance of food sustainability.
The initiative comes within the achievements of Expo 2023 Doha, which adopts harnessing the available means of scientific and human resources and kick-starts all possibilities in achieving self-sufficiency within the general strategy of the state for food security.
According to a consultant at the Food Security Department, the initiative represents an important opportunity which contributes to achieving food security in Qatar, and helps introduce the concept of sustainability in Qatari Society. This si done by working to reduce food waste and maintain sustainability as reducing food waste is one of the strategic goals of Qatar National Food Security Strategy.
He further said that preparations are now underway to launch the new version of National Food Security Strategy 2024-2030, which will further stretch to seven years to coincide with Qatar National Vision 2023.
